It is not easy to collect data from all over Europe when rules are uncommon. So let’s first note that console sales are counted in only 10 countries, while sales of digital games are collected in 33 countries…compared to 15 countries for physical games. Despite these differences, the big interest in GSD data is that it includes download sales as well as physical sales thanks to the participating companies… of which Nintendo is still a part.
With these few details in mind, we learned that 76 million games were sold in Europe in the first half of 2022, including 44 million downloads and 32 million in chests. Notably, Germany stands out as the largest market with 15.4 million toys sold between January and June 2022 (a nice 14% increase). Taking it off, the UK came in second with 14.3 million games sold (up 2%) while France concluded the platform with 10.2 million games sold (up 12%).
She has a Malinia mania
As on the other side of the Atlantic, Elden Ring is well ahead of game sales for the first half of 2022. So FromSoftware’s title excludes FIFA 22 and Pokémon Legends: Arceus, even if the latter has been disrupted due to lack of download sales, like all titles Other published by Nintendo.
Nintendo also occupies no less than 7 spots in the top 20, while Sony Interactive Entertainment comfortably places its two new big producers, Horizon Forbidden West (6th) and Gran Turismo 7 (7). Unsurprisingly, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga also confirms its success in Europe, as a reminder, it’s FromSoftware’s current dolphin in the US. Especially defeated Academy of Cerebral: Battle of the Brains, Call of Duty: Vanguard, on the other hand, confirms its poor performance with its 18th place.
PS5 availability is not improving
Taking into account a sample of just 10 countries, of which Germany and the UK are not part, just over two million consoles were sold in the first half, a drop of 21%. This is low and above all inevitable given the lack of a new generation of consoles, in particular for the PS5 which is down 44% compared to the first half of 2021. And Sony’s console continues to position itself in second place ahead of the Xbox Series (which has grown by 9%) while Switch consolidates its leadership by increasing sales by 7%.
To mention the accessories, finally, over 8.6 million products (controllers, helmets, and other amiibos) found a 4% drop. The DualSense controller has been the best-selling accessory since the start of the year with sales up 53%, thanks in particular to the launch of its new colors. Let’s add that the PlayStation Store prepaid card is still the most popular.
