Announced during the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase 2022, High On Life always sounds like a big video game joke coming out of the frantic skull of Justin Roiland, co-creator and producer of the Rick and Morty series. The pitch doesn’t negate that note with a funny story of an extraterrestrial cartel who wishes to use humans as the main ingredients for an extremely powerful drug. Are we not saying that there is a big difference between looking for a joke and having fun?

Since we’re real video game junkies, it’s pretty easy to find the ingredients for the hallucinogenic substance made in Squanch Game Labs. High on Life takes on a humorous FPS made up of elements already tasted in other creations. In its art direction, supposed second degree and platform game elements, the software designed by Squanch Games is reminiscent of a certain trip to the Savage Planet. In his living structure and weaponry we find Oddworld: The Fury of the Stranger. The game structure is simple: as a bounty hunter, the player has seven monsters to kill that are hidden in levels of their own.

It’s been highlighted in the trailers, however, that talking weapons don’t have anything exceptional about their use, which is perhaps the most unfortunate thing.. They ultimately only exist to terrorize the player through the entire saga. The program is really talkative: the heroes of the film use any pretext to reveal long monologues. Odd characters, the user will meet shovel with chattering creatures ranging from the infamous legless bounty hunter to the giant infanticide-advocating mammies. Plus, in High On Life, the toughest decisions are always rewarded (at least with success). It is unfortunate to note that the game is not dubbed in French. Swinging fuses during action scenes run the risk of being misunderstood if the player does not focus their attention on translation when firing shots. The audio quality is at least delirious.

As you understand, High on Life’s strong point is its humor that swings between Rick and Morty and South Park. Its introduction is particularly successful in this regard. For the rest, this irreverent FPS in its tone remains classic in its form. The player can rely on sight, lunge, grappling hook, secondary shots, scanner that indicates the target trajectory, explosive barrels and bonuses dropped by opponents in order to progress smoothly. By combining all of these elements, which are useful in the exploration phases and in combat, the sensations prove to be quite satisfying without overshadowing the temptations of the genre. The developers don’t hesitate to drop handfuls of enemies over the course of encounters, dragging out action sequences that should have been more succinct, which is the fault of gameplay that leaves little room for creativity despite funny pop-ups. However, the 60fps – fixed since the patch arrived on Xbox Series X – helps make the controls a pleasure.

Released December 13, 2022, High on Life currently has a 72/100 on Metacritic (based on 9 reviews). PC Invasion gave it an 8.5/10, Game Rant a 4/5, while GamesRadar+ and Digital Trends gave it a 3.5/5. At TheGamer, it’s no time to celebrate with a 2/5. For its part, Eurogamer gives minimal marks, berating the “miserable mix of ideas from other action platformers and Rick and Morty’s worst moments”. Yes, the title made by Squanch Games divides the niche press, like Scorn and Somerville before it, although it will allow you to watch Tammy and the T-Rex (film with Denise Richards and Paul Walker) in full. If you want to give him a shot, it’s important to know what you’re getting into, ie A good big rave from Justin Roiland who blasts video game icons with words (thanks to his sense of humor), but marries his classic with action. There is a difference from powder nose to powder in the eye.

High on Life is available on PC and Xbox Series X | S and Xbox One. It is part of the Game Pass catalog as of this writing.
