Like every year, at WWDC 2022, Apple announced a new version of its operating system for iPhones: iOS 16. From compatible smartphones to new features and time of availability, here’s everything you need to know in this update.

iOS 16 release date and time

After several months of public beta, iOS 16 is finally here. This release was announced at WWDC, and is expected on September 12, 2022.

Traditionally, Apple product updates are available starting at 7 PM CST. However, it is possible that the servers are saturated at startup time and that it is necessary to wait a bit to take advantage of better conditions.

What iPhones are compatible with iOS 16?

Below is the complete list of iOS 16 compatible iPhones. We note that some devices are no longer supported, such as iPhone 7, 7 Plus, 6s and 6s Plus or the first generation iPhone SE.

In short, Apple software monitoring remains typical compared to the standards we know on Android. The iPhone 8, for example, dates back to September 2017, so we are almost six years away from the update if we take into account the fact that it should continue to receive patches until September 2023.

How to install iOS 16?

Before any manipulations, we advise you to make a backup of your iPhone. Your iPhone must have enabled the latest update to date (15.6.1). Also check that your iPhone is connected to a Wi-Fi network; The update weighs several gigabytes and it would be a shame if it was deducted from your mobile plan.

Once done, here’s how to update your iPhone to iOS 16:

  1. meet in Settings On your iPhone, in the tab general.
  2. Click on system update. After a few seconds, the ban will prompt you to download iOS 16.
  3. Click on Download and install. The iPhone will then ask you to enter your code and accept the terms and conditions.
  4. After a longer or shorter time, your iPhone will restart to install the update. All you have to do is wait.

When iOS 16 is released as a public version, of course you don’t need to go through this procedure. All you have to do is install iOS 16 like any update on your iPhone by going to Settings > General > Software Update.

What’s new in iOS 16?

Even if we’re far from the set of new features that iOS 15 brings, iOS 16 still includes some new features, starting with the most important of course: the ability to customize the lock screen.

Lock screen: iOS is “androidizing”?

The eternal debate between iOS guarantors and Android fanatics (if it still exists) often has to do with one topic: which customization capabilities will be more important on Android. And while that doesn’t matter, Apple has decided to “revolutionize” its lock screen.

It is now possible to simply change the style of the clock by applying color filters to it, or even adding well-thought-out widgets. You can also save several different lock screens depending on the uses and even link them to the focus mode. Very convenient.

Still on the lock screen, note that notifications are now at the bottom. It should also include small animations for those that will be updated regularly. Apple showed some examples during WWDC 2022, such as the arrival of Uber or the result of a match that will be updated live.

iMessage is one of the apps that got the most improvements. Within 15 minutes after sending the message, you can now edit it or unsend it. Note that it is possible to make up to five adjustments.

The only limitation: Your chatter must have iOS 16. It is also possible to mark a conversation as unread thus keeping a small bubble next to it.

With SharePlay, you can also share the latest episode of your favorite series or a music track for remote commenting with your group of friends. Obviously, the content stays in sync between all recipients.

Focus mode has become better and more effective. You can link the lock screen to each focus mode and simply switch between them to find the tools that best match what you’re currently looking at. You can allow or block notifications from specific apps or people of your choice.

Apple apps are also gaining their own focus mode. It is enough to filter your emails for example and avoid receiving professional emails on your days off.

Photos and video

Last year, Apple introduced the ability to extract text from any image. Now it is also possible on videos. iOS 16 also suggests interesting elements that can be extracted from an image such as the number in the bottom left of the image.

Another fun addition: you can automatically crop an object in a photo by holding it with your finger. It can be a person, an animal, or even an inanimate object. We tested ourselves with a boat for example.

And also…

Other interesting little additions are worth noting. It is now possible to quickly correct text written with voice dictation, without having to press a button again to restart dictation.

We can also mention the few improvements that have been made to the maps that will add more detailed maps. Another small comfort point, security updates now happen in the background.

iOS 16: Here are the functions we won't enjoy right away

While iOS 16 is rolling out widely on Monday, September 12th, not all of the new features that Apple announced are on the list for this update yet. We are evaluating…
