In 2021 in France, the turnover of non-physical software was 82%, all media combined, compared to 18% for physical software (SELL). I am part of that majority who prefer to buy their games in a non-physical copy. Here’s why.

This article is a mood, it is subjective in nature. The author’s opinion is subjective and does not represent the opinion of the rest of Jeuxvideo.com’s writing.

I would rather buy my games in a non-materialized copy. If a physical copy of the address I imagine is placed before my eyes, along with a key of the same address, I shamelessly choose the key. The list of advantages in my opinion is huge. The box may be a standard of purchase for some, but for me, the immaterial solution perfectly caters to my personal problems. Each his own. I have a lot of respect for the dedicated and seasoned collectors who are still alive today to stack their toys, and fortunately there is still some respect. I have absolutely nothing against stores either, and I hope they continue to exist, but I don’t want to stuff my small living space with plastic containers that will gather dust in a few days. Moreover, when you live in the Paris area, saving space is essential. This is one of the first arguments that come to mind when buying a digital game. Anyway, my collection, I can create it by default on my Steam library. Scrolling through my list of games and seeing all the scrolling of my cumulative holdings gives me delicious pleasure and is enough to satisfy me.

In general, I like fast, intuitive and lazy shopping. I mostly order everything online, rent my movies and have my food delivered. Of course, the same rule applies to games for me. No need to browse the shelves of Fnac on Saturday afternoons under 40 degrees to choose my next title, just go back to the suggestions made by Steam and add them to my cart with one click. I’m lazy at this point. Let’s not even talk about Game Pass which gives me the crazy ability to test hundreds of titles as I see fit at a fixed price. This is the natural evolution of the market. And of course, there’s the price argument: sales are more frequent in my online stores and much more. Well, not to mention the physical games used, of course. This is also one of the physical strengths in my opinion: having the possibility to resell your game after you’ve finished it, to invest in the next game.

Availability

So let’s not even talk about availability: I obviously have a much better chance of finding a digital copy of Pathologic HD than wandering around my local Micromania. Online, no inventory or seniority issue! Just sharing made easy. It’s still on Steam, just activate Family Sharing and you’re done. No need to loan his copy of the game to his friend, wondering if he’ll end up returning it to us one day. What is causing you some concern?

So of course the question of the possible disappearance of my file arises. The situation arose already recently with Sony films in Austria, for example. It’s a risk I take. In my personal case, I’m better able to press a CD than watch my game deleted from my library. I’m not even talking about theft or scratches risks. My digital game, I can take it everywhere with me without having to think about it and without risking losing it. Finally, it goes without saying that with this idea we consume less plastic and its environmental impact is less than physical toys. All that has been said.
