The study found that drinking 2-3 cups of coffee a day has significant health benefits

A study of nearly 450,000 Britons concluded that daily coffee consumption was “associated with a significant reduction in cardiovascular disease and mortality”.

The study was conducted with information provided by a group of 449,563 participants, with an average age of 58 years, taken from the UK Biobank database. It “contains in-depth genetic and health information from half a million British participants”. The authors state that the median follow-up for this group “was 12.5 years”.

27% lower risk of death when drinking two to three cups of ground coffee

Participants were divided into six groups: those who do not drink coffee, less than one a day, one group, two to three, four to five groups and more than five cups a day. Of the approximately 450,000 profiles selected for the study, 198,062 (44.1%) were consumers of instant coffee, 82.575 (18.4%) of ground coffee, and 68,416 (15.2%) of decaffeinated coffee.

The results of each group were compared to understand the effect of coffee on health, and if the benefits of this drink are noticed as early as 1 cup a day, they peak with 2 or 3 cups. With a higher consumption (4 cups or more), there are always benefits, but they are less and less significant.

Compared to people who didn’t drink coffee, those who drank 2 to 3 cups of decaffeinated coffee per day had a 14% lower risk of death, Bloomberg says. This same probability was 27% for two to three cups of ground coffee per day, and 11% for instant coffee.

Compared with the group of non-coffee drinkers, the risk of cardiovascular disease was reduced by 6% for those who consumed decaffeinated coffee (2 to 3 cups per day), 20% for those who consumed ground coffee and 9% for those who consumed instant coffee. Collection.

On the other hand, “ground and instant – but not decaffeinated – coffee were associated with reduced arrhythmias” in the participants.

Coffee is made with “more than 100 ingredients”

It is still difficult to understand which element plays in favor of health in coffee. The researchers emphasized that coffee is a “complex alliance of more than 100 biologically active ingredients, with caffeine being the best known.” It’s also to study other ingredients that contain caffeine, in part, as part of the study.

The study notes that coffee “also contains polyphenols,” antioxidants, “and microelements such as magnesium.” However, “these ingredients have been shown to reduce oxidative stress, modulate metabolism” or even “improve the gut microbiome.”

Many other studies prior to this study have already indicated the benefits of coffee consumption on the body. In 2017, research found that “increased coffee consumption was associated with a lower risk of death from all causes, particularly circulatory and gastrointestinal diseases.”
