Paris Motor Show 2022 – Renault Scenic Vision, is the minivan dead?

The first generation of Renault Scenic is one of the biggest commercial successes in the modern history of the Diamond brand. Launched in 1996, this new type of flagship expanded the Mégane’s chassis as far as possible to provide unparalleled spaciousness in a model with compact dimensions. He single-handedly launched fashion mini minivans (Renault Xsara Picasso, Opel Zafira, Fiat Multipla, etc.) and sold 2.8 million units throughout his career! After 26 years, the Renault Scenic car no longer interests anyone. Still available to order in Grand Scenic Edition for the time being, it has been completely wrecked by the advent of SUVs and a complete lack of customer interest in these now-old-fashioned models. The current Scenic was launched in 2016, however it did everything to look like the SUV itself…

So, are compact MPVs dead? Those as we know them, yes. But Renault is not giving up on the Scénic. The diamond-shaped brand has unveiled the Scénic Vision, a concept car whose design will announce the brand’s future stylistic directions and future Scénic product lines. With a height of just 1.5 meters and rather sturdy proportions, it doesn’t have much in the way of classic minivans. How can such a machine coexist with the modern Mégane E-Tech and the futuristic alternative to the Mégane? One thing is for sure: the production version will arrive in 2024.

The biggest surprise of the Scenic Vision concept is actually hidden underground. There is, of course, an electric motor (220 hp) to drive the machine and batteries (40 kWh). But also a 15 kW (about twenty hp) fuel cell, which is completely new technology at Renault. So, is the Diamond brand planning to switch to hydrogen like Toyota and BMW? Not really, if we are to believe the recent statements made by President Luca de Meo that he “does not believe in hydrogen in the short term”. But Renault will still keep an eye on it (particularly through its Hyvia subsidiary that prepares hydrogen facilities).

Caradisiac, partner of the Paris Motor Show

As in 2018, Caradisiac will once again become a partner in the 2022 Mondial de l’Auto to be held in Paris from October 17-23. Thus, the Caradisiac editorial team will be moved to its own booth for the duration of the show to analyze, dissect, photograph and photograph all new models. This will, of course, also be an opportunity for you to come, as usual, to meet our journalists. Which new or used car to buy? They will answer all your questions. Until then, we on Caradisiac will give you all the information we could have gotten from the manufacturers on their new models.
