Used: Is Now the Best Time to Buy a Tesla Model 3?

Tesla Model 3

The Tesla Model Y broke the internet this weekend. Model 3 broke Le Bon Coin. Does this signal the end of speculation about the sedan?

Elon Musk made the association laugh by declaring that the Tesla Model Y would be the best-selling car on the planet. According to his estimates, which are less simple than they sound, the combination of SUV market shares and the Tesla Model 3’s evolution curve would be enough to confirm that the Model Y could ditch the Toyota RAV4. Tesla wants to reassure itself by relying on its production capabilities, but if the Model Y starts to gain, that’s far off the mark: the RAV4 is the #1 global sold with over 1.13 million copies in 2021! However, the madness about Tesla isn’t about to run out, as the debut of the entry-level Tesla Model Y in Europe has proven to us.

Attractive version, with a single rear engine (284 hp according to our official sources), a smaller battery (with an estimated capacity of 55-60 kWh), a WLTP range of 455 km and, above all, a reduced price: 49,990 euros. Or 15,000 euros less than the Grande Autonomie version, which promises 395 horsepower, all-wheel drive, and 533 kilometers of autonomy. Unless you prefer paybacks at any cost, have regular use of your SUV in the mountains in the winter, or want to reassure yourself with extra autonomy that might be useless in the real world (above all the distance between stations is what matters), the typical payment Y weighs heavily when choosing.

Especially since it manages to be cheaper than the entry-level Tesla Model 3: an SUV is about 3,500 euros more expensive than a sedan! Great discount, when an additional 2,500 euros are required in the Long Autonomy version and 3,500 euros in the Performance version. In a world where the masses think in relative rather than absolute terms when it comes to the price of products, this makes “cheaper” sound like “cheap”. Presenting the entire Tesla world in an equally modern SUV form, the Model Y has every chance of meeting success.

Overloaded Used Tesla Model 3 Classifieds

Friday is proof of that. Right after the American brand was announced in our columns, the little hedgehog checking orders on Tesla’s website stalled in the face of a delirious flow of orders. Even drivers who clearly had no plans to drive an SUV, or even a Tesla, were tempted. side effect? Classified ad sites have exploded with a massive influx of used Tesla Model 3s. In just 24 hours, 171 Model 3 ads were posted on the popular Le Bon Coin website. An increase of 362% compared to the previous 24 hours (Thursday to Friday morning), when only 37 new ads were posted. A real tidal wave in the flea market, then strained by speculation and the recent increase in prices. Will this new, more generous offer allow you to do good business?

More than the law of supply and demand, it’s the strong price tag of this new Model Y that can reallocate cards. Therefore, buyers will be more inclined to buy a new SUV than a used sedan shipped by an owner considering parting with a Ferrari 250 GTO. Also, the prospect of such a good deal not staying for long has other buyers, particularly Model 3 owners, rushing in, while reselling their sedans at more consistent prices to speed up the sale.

Low prices with the latest listings

From the first research, these theories were confirmed. And some obviously didn’t wait long to part with their Model 3 because, of the more than 500 listings listed, nearly 100 2022 editions have less than 20,000 kilometers on the odometer. There are even almost new models with less than 5,000 km, and prices hover around the new ones. As mileage goes up, most prices are finally dropping, if not less related to Tesla’s price grid.

But it is the differences in prices that are really surprising depending on the date of publication. An example of a 2022 Model 3 SR+ published a few weeks ago, with 10,000 km mileage at €54,000. This is almost 6000 euros more than this other version, the Gris Nuit and also from 2022, with 9,000 kilometers and it was put online on Friday. At an equivalent price, it will also be possible to restore a 2022 car with 6,200 kilometers on the clock, for a version with 14,500 kilometers that has not found a buyer for more than a month.

Of course, the differences are not always distinguished and the classification of models is well maintained sometimes. The fact remains that with the filter of the latest ads, only 2 models 3 come close to 50,000 euros out of almost 40 ads on the first page. On the contrary, with the older ad filter, SR + models, even older ones, exceed the €50,000 mark. This leads us to believe that the Tesla Model 3’s rating may decline slowly in the coming weeks.

What used Tesla Model 3 to choose?

Autonomy Standard Plus, Long Autonomy or Performance, only you can select the version best suited to your needs and desires. Also offensive at an aggressive price (this has been less true since the beginning of the year), the Tesla Model 3 SR+ is the most mainstream, and the least exclusive by definition. It is she who shows the most affordable prices for a modern model and low mileage: calculate 46,000 euros (average prices offered) for models with 20,000-25,000 km. But where the problem is, the higher-mileage versions aren’t necessarily more affordable with similar equipment: the 3 SR+ is offered with nearly 50,000 kilometers on average with 3,000 euros less.

The Long Autonomy version seems to be the most interesting. On the other hand with the technical sheet (bigger battery, higher charging power, all-wheel drive). But on the other hand the price difference with the difference of nine. Because with the sale price initially high, it was safer than the speculators, who instead rushed to the SR+ with the maximum reward at stake. Sur le site de Tesla, cette version est affichée au prix neuf de 62 490 € avec des livraisons prévues pour début 2023. Sur le marché de l’occasion, vous pourrez négocier des modèles avec près de alent € 50 000 km aux rate.

Also, when searching, don’t be fooled by the name of the unicorn community. It distinguishes the transitional Tesla Model 3s, which has an LFP battery and a more powerful old-generation motor with greater response (0-100 km/h in 5.6 seconds versus 6.1 seconds for later models). The best of both worlds, but the legend is a bit exaggerated compared to the actual earnings.

Tesla Fit Pages Are No Longer Really Competitive

If your budget is tight, know that there is no Model 3 on offer for less than €40,000 at the moment. At this price, you can leave with an SR + version of an average of 70,000 km, or with a long autonomy that has already exceeded 170,000 km. At the other end of the scale are the offers of a Model 3 with thousands of kilometers already on the clock at €70,000, or €3,000 more than the new!

If good strides are made across classifieds sites for individuals or professionals, the Used Tesla Deals still reflect the state of the market a few weeks ago, and are no longer really competitive. Because if the complete car repair and extended warranty for one year or an additional 20,000 km once the initial warranty expires were serious advantages in the face of other advertisements, the prices are now high. An example of this price + SR from the end of 2021, with 13,000 km on the clock, is offered at a price of 56,900 euros. It is very expensive to pay, even for Unicorn, when similar models that were recently published are circulating around 47-48000 euros.

Used Tesla Model 3: Take it or leave it?

Just two days after its debut, the Tesla Model Y RWD is quieting the game in relation to the Model 3 in use. Thus, fixing their price makes it possible to reduce the prices that are usually practiced until now. Admittedly, there are still a few speculators in the market, but the trend is certain. And you should continue to pursue deflation over the next few weeks: Because even if the Model 3 drops at times, its prices are still close to those of a new SUV. And it must be said that the arguments of the latter are more tempting, with greater habitability and, let’s say, the quality of finishing moreover more stringent when leaving the factory in Berlin. In short, as long as the entry-level Tesla Model Y doesn’t suddenly ramp up (which isn’t impossible at all with a Tesla), the Model 3 can be more interesting at times. There is still a little patience to save a few thousand euros.
