How do you pronounce the name of this new brand? “wait” where “Pilid” ? Chinese manufacturer officials decided: it will be “Be Why Di”. Because Byd is a contraction “Build your dreams” And for the brand, the dream is like the three electric cars that will be revealed at the upcoming Paris Motor Show. Visitors to Porte de Versailles from October 17th will discover a Tang SUV, a gigantic 4.87m baby and Han’s large sedan.

Two cars not really favored on the old continent and their destinies rather for an American and a Chinese career. Is Europe the kingdom of compact SUVs, the Peugeot 3008 or the Hyundai Tucson? So, hand made a third thief especially for us. And we were able to take the wheel for a few laps off a closed road around The Hague in the Netherlands.

But before turning on the ignition, it is necessary to take a tour of the owner. The overall line of the machine is softer than the 3008, and less pleasant than the Citroën C5 Aircross line. Byd didn’t want to upset the drawing board by suggesting a car in a revolutionary style. His interior design office demonstrated wisdom, with smooth lines, able to blend into our landscapes. Wise lines that are still in tune with that at 4.45m. The lights, all with LEDs, are perfectly integrated into the chrome front bezel of the same plastic as the third rolls.

But this harmonious exterior, but in general very classic, contrasts with the more radical interior. Inside this Atto 3, all the elements are treated in an original way. From door handles reminiscent of Citroen cars of the 1960s, to the scalloped dashboard, to the side pockets shaped like a guitar, with its taut strings attached, the designers let loose. This extravagance will surprise you when you spot it and make you smile. Will it go out of style with everyday use? This is sometimes a very assertive design problem. In any case, if this interior can erode the appearance, it should not corrode at all. Because not only are the materials used and the foam plastic attached almost everywhere are of very good quality, but they are also perfectly assembled.

In terms of control, the display installed in front of the steering wheel is small but provides all the essential information for driving. Others are traced back to the large 15.6-inch screen which, with a simple pulse, can switch to portrait mode, which is the little Byd’s specialty. But if all the controls for air conditioning, infotainment or engine settings (sport, comfort or regeneration) are available via this panel, they can also be controlled using the switches in the center console.

Good handling in such an amazing cabin, the driver can also count on smiling passengers, because they are especially spoiled. The back seat has surprisingly deep seating and there is plenty of legroom. The trunk was not sacrificed to the same extent, and with it 440 liters the figure is a good average of this type. An additional hatch hides the charging cables that will allow the Atto 3 to communicate with DC up to 88 kW and AC up to 11 kW. The result: 29 minutes are needed to reach 80% of the battery capacity of 60.4 kWh.

This battery, which is signed by Byd, one of the world’s specialists in the genre, does not use conventional cells like most of its competitors, but blades that save space in height and partly explain the space available to the rim. It also provides better efficiency, which the manufacturer estimates at 89.6%. These blades are connected to the floor of a new platform called 3.0. Is it capable of collecting 204 hp from the engine (as Byd signed) and 310 Nm? Yes and no. When placed in front (it is traction), it provides mass from 0 to 100 km / h in 7.3 seconds and very correctly rips 1750 kg of crew.

On the other hand, in the cornering sequence, and certainly a few on the test track, the SUV tends to nod. Nothing really bad, but American influence did take its toll on the engineers responsible for developing the running gear. There is no point in switching to the “Sport” mode to correct this defect, since the suspension is not controlled.

However, this softness of the suspensions is by no means inhibiting. After all, the family electric SUV isn’t really meant to make big attacks at Turini’s POIs and if you climb into it, it’s just for enjoying the scenery. Perfectly manufactured and perfectly in tune with customer expectations of this type of machine, it could rock the emerging market of zero-emission compact SUVs. As long as the prices are attractive. To get to know them, you will have to wait a few more weeks as they will not be contacted before the Paris Motor Show.
