In addition to its range of COVR wifi solutions, D-Link now offers the new Eagle Pro AI family, which integrates routers, repeaters and mesh wifi systems, including the D-Link Eagle Pro AI M15-3. WiFi 6 supports a cumulative speed of 1500 Mbit / s with three units to cover one home, all at a price of less than 200 euros.

The D-Link Eagle Pro AI M15-3 claims theoretical throughputs of 1200 Mbit/s on the 5 GHz band and 300 Mbit/s on the 2.4 GHz band. It does not have a third band dedicated to communication between modules, so the theoretical throughput is halved when the device is connected to the module acting as a repeater.

The three units of this network system are completely identical and can therefore be installed as a router or a satellite. The connection consists of two Gigabit Ethernet sockets: the first socket, yellow, must be connected to the modem or player box; The second is used to connect a device via Ethernet. The power jack, WPS button, and another reset complete the connection.

An indicator light on the front lets you know the status of each of the units. It is also possible to deactivate it or make it flash in order to select a specific unit.

In terms of appearance, the M15-3 units are almost perfect cubes 9.2 cm (9.1 cm high) weighing 200 grams each. The corners are rounded on the vertical edges, while the top face is perforated for heat evacuation.

Installing the D-Link Eagle Pro AI M15-3 does not present any particular problem. The simplest way is to go through the application, the more experienced can configure the system directly from the web administration interface at the address indicated under the modules.

The app explains all the steps step by step, from scanning the QR code to updating the modules and creating IDs.

The application is simple and effective.

We note the presence of parental controls that offer relatively basic functions: profile creation, device attachment, blacklisting of 24 websites and time slot.

Access to more advanced settings refers to the web management interface. However, the latter is not at all suitable for a smartphone screen. So it will be necessary to access it via the computer to make the required adjustments comfortably.

Debts

To evaluate the performance of the D-Link Eagle Pro AI M15-3 Networking System, we attached a unit to a player box that we connected to a laptop via a 2.5Gb/s adapter. We transfer a 4.73 GB file (disk image) from the first laptop to a second machine with an Intel AX210 wifi 6 chip, but also to a fixed desktop computer upstairs connected to a PCIe Gigabyte GC-WBAX200 with external antennas and an updated Intel Wi-Fi chip 6E AX210, compatible with wifi 6E.

At the earliest, speeds do not exceed 600 Mbit / s on the 5 GHz band.

Speeds closest to the router unit (point 1) are suitable for a theoretical speed of 1200 MB / s with real speeds of about 600 MB / s, that is, a download rate of 74 MB / s for the router unit, and crash bitrates to stabilize at about 170 MB Bytes/sec. At point 2, bit rates are usually halved if there is no dedicated frequency band for communication between modules. However, it is divided by three here with a measurement of less than 200 MB / s. Thanks to the third module, the M15-3 allows us to deliver enough speed in point 5 to take advantage of video-on-demand services.

On the 2.4 GHz band, speeds do not exceed 140 MB / s.

The 2.4 GHz band is far from overclocked to the nearest 132 Mbit/s. Speeds drop below 100 MB/s at the nearest satellite (point 2) and drop to less than 50 MB/s at point 5.

Thus the coverage of the M15-3 is relatively low and the communication between the units does not appear to be optimal. If you already have a recent wifi 6 box or router that offers decent speeds, you’ll get better results with a single repeater like the TP-Link RE605x we tested a few months ago, and that’s at a lower price.
