On their Facebook account, Sylvain and Pierre, who usually entertain us from the Vilebrequin YouTube channel, have condensed a previous video dedicated to electric cars in general and Tesla in particular. The work done around the American manufacturer is correct and interesting for those new to the brand. By contrast, grievances about electric vehicles in general are 5-10 years old for the most part. However, there is a general message to be heard.

Pierre and Sylvain love the cars that go to Froome and remind you regularly. But not with today’s petrol or diesel model. It might sound very nice to me compared to electricity, which has made tremendous progress in 10 years.

Tesla, the future?

DC charging power was often limited to 50 kW. Many brands, including Porsche, Kia and Hyundai, have exceeded 200 kW. Others will quickly follow.

Batteries are constantly evolving to require less sensitive materials and provide greater performance. It is recycled as needed, at rates in excess of 90%. Cells containing solid electrolytes and/or using other chemicals are now arriving. It only took a few years to put twice the power capacity in the same place.

The necessity of having a thermal car in the house

Thanks to the early adopters of lithium-ion electrical mobility, battery life estimates increased from 5 to 10 years, before they finally experienced an important second life as stable storage elements for electricity. The methods for obtaining lithium are diverse, for example, by exploiting thermal sources or sea water.

Convert all cars to electricity?

And converting the entire fleet to electricity in a short time, is that a good idea? Accelerating the scrapping of petrol and diesel cars to make electric model-building chains run faster, with a climate emergency that, on the contrary, requires slowing down the carbon impact in the industrial sector in particular, is not necessarily a good thing.

Telephone electric relay was supposed to start much earlier, and allow for a very flexible retrofit. This implies a convertible, for example, a Citroen C3 or Renault Twingo, usually filled with gasoline. In such models, you lose nothing by doing it. Their engines don’t have anything melodious about them. So, let’s go without remorse.

Kill the heat engine?

Killing a heat engine is not necessarily a good idea. In general, we should drive less, and much less, and not just change the energy. But is this consistent with the rhythm that society imposes on us? This is an additional question. Who is ready to do this? What about public transportation? Massive postponement seems so difficult when everything values ​​individuality, with enclosed spaces demonized in times of an ongoing pandemic.

I believe most in developing the small mobility of everyday life, such as cycling, scooters and even walking when possible. The younger generations are interested in it, and that’s very good. My son, for example, has owned a small GTI for about 5 years. But he never drove it. He didn’t even get his license. Having struggled with public transportation causing him so much anxiety at work, he had just fallen for a motorbike.

It perfectly illustrates this transition period made up of doubts, attempts and failures before finding their own asphalt road. Sustainable mobility must be in the plural. If there is a message to remember from the brief video by Sylvain and Pierre, this is it!
