The final Grand Prix weekend kicked off with the first free practice for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. This session was evidently in very pleasant weather in the Principality.

For Sebastian Vettel, this is the start of his last Grand Prix as he will retire at the end of the weekend. Nicholas Latifi, Daniel Ricciardo and Mick Schumacher will not be attending next year and it could also be a last dance for them in F1.

The teams brought some recent small novelties at the last Grand Prix. Thus, McLaren tested a new floor design, and this was also the case for Ferrari, which made some subtle changes to its own design.

There were only 12 pregnant during this first session of the weekend. Liam Lawson took over from Max Verstappen at Red Bull, and Robert Schwartzman replaced Carlos Sainz at Ferrari. On the Alpine F1 side, Jacques Doohan replaced Fernando Alonso, while Pato Oward drove in place of Lando Norris at McLaren.

In Aston Martin F1, Lance Stroll’s place was taken by Filipe Drogovich, and in Williams, potential future holder Logan Sargeant rode in Latifi’s car. Pietro Fittipaldi drove to Haas F1 with a single seat for Mick Schumacher, and Robert Kubica took Guanyu Zhou’s place in Alfa Romeo F1.

Smooth EL1 session at Yas Marina Circuit

Sergio Pérez was the first to set a record time of 1’28″926, beaten by Charles Leclerc with a time of 1’28″724. Lawson finished second on hard tyres, and Alex Albon third on medium.

Perez then improved the fastest lap to 1’28” 159, but Leclerc hit back at 1’27” 917. The two men, vying for the honorary title of world vice-champion this weekend, kept exchanging best times, with the Mexican having the last word at the start. Course at 1’27” 853.

O’Ward suffered damage on his first lap in his MCL36 and had to return to the pits. Fortunately, he was soon out on track to capitalize on his first EL1s in Formula 1.

Lawson regained third, but on his return to the pits he just missed his box at the start of the pit lane and had to be maneuvered by his mechanics: “Sorry, I’m used to going further than that.”‘, a reference to his previous trials with AlphaTauri.

Albon then took the lead at 1’27” 840, but was soon overtaken by Valtteri Bottas at 1’27” 655. Once again, Perez and Leclerc resumed their battle, with the Red Bull driver caught at 1’26” 967, and Monaco beat him seconds later. Low at 1’26” 888.

Lewis Hamilton went out on the soft tires and took a best time of 1’26” 633. Mercedes F1 confirmed its good form at the end of the season as George Russell finished second, two-tenths behind his team-mate.

Hamilton finished the lap ahead of Russell and Leclerc, then Perez and Liam Lawson, very effective in his Red Bull debut. Vettel is sixth, ahead of Schwartzman, who also shines. Ricciardo, Bottas and Albon complete the top ten ahead of Frenchman Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon.

Yuki Tsunoda comes in after Kubica, Sargent, Kevin Magnussen, Fittipaldi, Oward, Doohan and Drugovic.
